Dimitrios Shipwreck

The Dimitrios ran aground on Valtaki beach in December 1981 and was never salvaged, and for four decades the hull has sat in shallow water a few metres from the sand, oxidising into an orange-brown shell that photographs unusually well against the pale beach and the Laconian gulf. Accounts of how it came to be there conflict, ranging from mechanical failure to insurance and smuggling stories, none of them documented, which has only helped the legend. The wreck has visibly deteriorated: the superstructure has collapsed, the deck has fallen in, and storms move plates each winter, so the ship people photograph now is much less complete than it was in the 2000s. It sits on an open public beach with no facilities.

When to go

Spring and autumn for light and comfort; sunset is the classic photograph. Winter storms are what break it up further, and the beach is bleak in bad weather.

Honest expectations

The metal is sharp, thin and unstable, and climbing on or entering the wreck is genuinely dangerous, with pieces failing without warning. There are no facilities, shade or lifeguards. It is a ten-minute stop rather than a destination.
