Menalon Trail

The Menalon Trail runs about 75 kilometres in eight stages across the western flank of Mount Menalon, linking stone villages, gorges and monasteries: Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Zygovisti, Elati, Vytina, Nymfasia, Magouliana, Valtesiniko and Lagkadia. It was waymarked and documented to European standards and in 2015 became the first Greek route to receive the Leading Quality Trails certification, which means signage, maintenance and stage-by-stage accommodation are genuinely reliable, unusual in Greek hiking. Stages run three to seven hours and none is technically difficult, though the descent into the Lousios gorge and the climb out are strenuous. Because every stage ends in a village with guesthouses and tavernas, walkers carry a day pack rather than camping gear.

When to go

Late April to June for flowers and running water, September to November for stable weather and colour. Snow closes higher stages in winter, and midsummer is hot on exposed sections.

Honest expectations

Public transport between villages is minimal, so a car shuttle or a booked luggage transfer makes the logistics work. Guesthouses are limited in number and should be reserved in advance for autumn weekends. Individual stages can be walked as day hikes.

Nearby

Dimitsana, Stemnitsa and the Lousios gorge lie on the route itself; Tripoli is the regional gateway.
