Getting thereFrom Upper Hell's Gate or Troy Hill on Saba; walk in either direction
EntryTrail fee

The Sandy Cruz trail runs along the northern flank of Saba's mountain, contouring through wet forest of tree ferns, elephant ears and mahogany rather than climbing, which makes it the island's best walk for seeing the rainforest without the stair grind of Mount Scenery. It links Upper Hell's Gate with Troy Hill. The path is narrow, muddy in most conditions and cut into steep ground the whole way.

What you actually see

  • The rainforest - tree ferns, elephant ears and mahogany along the route.
  • The contour line - a walk through the forest without a summit climb.
  • The northern flank - the wettest and greenest side of the mountain.
  • The steep ground - a narrow cut path across slopes falling away below.

When to go

December to April is drier and the path is more manageable. The forest is wet in every month. Cloud sits on this flank often.

Honest expectations

The path is muddy and slippery almost always and proper footwear is essential. It is narrow with steep drops in places. Walking one way means arranging a lift back.

Nearby

Zion's Hill is east, and Mount Scenery is above.
