Tumu Mountain Trail

Tumu Mountain rises to 494 metres on Ofu and an old jeep track, now a walking route, climbs it from near the airstrip through forest to a summit area with clearings that open out over the reef, the channel and Olosega across it, and on a clear day to Ta'u beyond. The climb takes a couple of hours each way and is steep but on a made surface, which is unusual for a trail in the territory.

What you actually see

• The made track - an old jeep route giving a firmer surface than most trails here.
• The summit clearings - the openings with views over the group.
• The reef view - the Ofu reef seen from above on the way up.
• The forest - the woodland the track climbs through.

When to go

May to September is the drier season. Cloud can close the views. Rain makes the track slippery despite the surface.

Honest expectations

The climb is steep and hot and takes longer than the distance suggests. Cloud frequently closes the summit views. Getting to Ofu at all is the harder part of the trip.
