Diros Caves

At Diros a freshwater river runs underground and meets the sea, and the galleries it carved are filled almost to the ceiling. Visits are made lying back in a flat-bottomed boat rowed by a guide, drifting along channels where stalactites come down to within arm's reach of the water and their reflections double everything. The water is fresh, shallow and clear enough to see the floor. The boat section is followed by a short walk out through a dry passage to the sea entrance. Surveying continues in parts of the system that visitors never see. The cave sits on a bare stretch of Mani coast where the landscape above is stone, low scrub and tower houses, which makes the contrast underground sharper.

What you actually see

• The boat route - flooded galleries with formations reaching down close to the water.
• The reflections - still water doubling the stalactites into continuous columns.
• The walking exit - a dry passage leading out to the cave mouth at sea level.
• The Mani coast outside - bare limestone, small coves and tower houses on the slopes above.

When to go

Spring and autumn mean short queues and a comfortable wait outside. In July and August you take a numbered ticket and can wait an hour or more in full sun before your boat. The cave is a steady cool temperature year round, so bring a layer whatever the weather above. Arrive at opening or late in the afternoon.

Honest expectations

The tour is short, fixed-pace and gives no time to linger or set up photographs. Ceilings are low in places and taller passengers spend the trip ducking. Anyone uneasy in enclosed spaces should think twice, as there is no way to leave mid-route. The site is not wheelchair accessible, and the summer queue is the main complaint people come away with.
