Wormeldange

Wormeldange is generally regarded as the heart of Luxembourg Riesling, with the Koeppchen slope above the village producing the country's most highly rated wines from that grape on steep south-facing ground. A chapel stands at the top of the slope on a site used since the Roman period, reached by a path through the vines. Family estates and the cooperative both take visitors for tasting. Riesling does better here than further south because the slope faces almost due south and holds the heat, and the growers have planted accordingly for well over a century.

When to go

May to October is the season, with harvest in September and October. Tastings should be arranged with the smaller estates. Autumn colour on the slopes is good.

Honest expectations

Smaller estates need an appointment rather than walk-in visits. The village is small with limited facilities. The vineyard path is steep.
