Remich

Remich sits on the Moselle where the river forms the German border, and its esplanade runs along the water for the better part of a kilometre under plane trees, which makes it the most used riverside in the Luxembourg Moselle. Wine cellars are cut into the hillside behind, several open for visits and tasting, and boats run up and down the river in season. The vineyards climb the slopes above the town.

Background

Remich is a commune with city status and had 4,101 inhabitants in 2024. By surface area it is the smallest commune in Luxembourg, and it sits on the Moselle's left bank. In the 5th century the Roman settlement of Remacum gradually became Remich. Parts of the town fortifications of 952 survive, among them a former town gate devoted to the saint who protects fishermen and sailors, now a national monument. The rectangular tower of the decanal church was a defensive tower in the 12th century. The first bridge over the Moselle was built in 1866, and the present one dates from 1958. Since the river was canalised in 1964, boats can use it all year.

When to go

May to October is the season; wine festivals fall in the autumn. Boats run from spring to autumn. Winter is quiet with cellars still open by arrangement.

Good to know

The esplanade is busy at weekends with day traffic. Cellar visits are commercial and end in a shop. The town itself is modest beyond the riverside.
