Emerald Pool

Not everything on Dominica demands six hours of mud: the Emerald Pool asks ten minutes on a gentle rainforest loop and pays out one of the island's loveliest scenes - a waterfall dropping into a grotto pool whose water holds a green glow from the canopy light, ferns dripping down the rock walls around it. It sits inside the UNESCO-listed Morne Trois Pitons National Park on the road to the Kalinago Territory, which makes it the natural pairing stop, and the swim is cool, shallow-edged and open to everyone the Boiling Lake would break.

When to go

Year round - flow holds and the trail is all-weather. Early morning or late afternoon dodges the cruise-excursion window that fills the grotto midday. After heavy rain the pool runs cloudy for a day.

Honest expectations

It is the island's most visited natural site and feels it when coaches coincide - the magic needs the quiet hours. The rocks at the pool edge are slick; the ladder-and-rail entries help. Ten minutes of trail means no wilderness solitude; for that, the island holds two hundred harder options.
