Waitukubuli National Trail

Waitukubuli - the Kalinago name for Dominica, 'tall is her body' - lends itself to the Caribbean's first true long-distance trail: 185 kilometres in fourteen segments running the island's whole mountainous length, from Scotts Head's peninsula in the south to the Cabrits garrison in the north. It strings together rainforest ridges, farm tracks, Kalinago Territory, waterfalls and coastal cliffs, sleeping in village guesthouses and homestays between segments. Most visitors day-hike the celebrated stretches; a determined minority walks the whole thing in about two weeks and joins a small, muddy club.

When to go

February to May is the driest window and the only sensible season for the full traverse. Individual segments walk year round between showers. Post-hurricane repairs periodically close segments - check current status with the trail office before committing.

Honest expectations

Maintenance varies by segment and year: some stretches are groomed, others overgrown or storm-damaged, and river crossings rise fast after rain. Waymarking is decent but a guide or GPS track saves grief on the wilder segments. Logistics - transport to trailheads, guesthouse gaps - take real planning. The mud is a lifestyle, not an inconvenience.
