The Boiling Lake Hike

Dominica's signature hike earns every superlative honestly: about three hours each way from Laudat through rainforest, over a mountain shoulder, and down into the Valley of Desolation - a steaming, sulphur-stained moonscape of vents and hot streams - before the final climb to a cliff-ringed crater where a grey lake genuinely boils, its centre rolling like a stockpot under a column of steam. It is generally counted the world's second-largest boiling lake after New Zealand's Frying Pan. The route lies inside the UNESCO-listed Morne Trois Pitons National Park, and the reward-to-effort ratio is among the Caribbean's best.

When to go

February to May gives the driest trail; the route runs year round but rain turns the climbs into mud chutes. Start by 7am - afternoon cloud swallows the crater views and the six-plus hours need daylight. The lake occasionally drains and refills after seismic shifts; guides know its current mood.

Honest expectations

This is a hard hike: relentless up-and-down, slick roots, exposed scrambles and no bail-out points - fitness and proper shoes are non-negotiable, and a licensed guide is strongly advised (solo hikers have been lost here). The lake's edge is a place for photographs, not approaches. Everything you wear will smell of sulphur and mud afterwards; that is the badge.
