Middleham Falls

Middleham Falls drops around sixty metres in a single thread into a pool in dense rainforest inside Morne Trois Pitons National Park, and the walk in from either Laudat or Cochrane takes about an hour through forest thick enough that the falls are heard well before they are seen. The trail is muddy, rooted and steep in places. The pool at the base is cold and can be swum. A side path leads to Tou Santi, a sulphurous cave.

What you actually see

• The single drop - around sixty metres falling into the pool below.
• The rainforest trail - an hour through dense forest from either trailhead.
• The plunge pool - cold water at the base, deep enough to swim.
• Tou Santi - the sulphurous hole reached on a side path from the trail.

When to go

December to April is drier and the trail is less of a mudslide. Rain makes the route slippery and the pool dangerous. Mornings are best for light in the gorge.

Honest expectations

The trail is genuinely muddy and rooted, with steep sections that are hard work in either direction. Spray at the base means the pool area is always wet and cold. Rain can make the crossing points dangerous.
