Wotten Waven

Wotten Waven sits in the Roseau Valley where sulphurous water and steam come up through the ground in quantity, and several small operations have built pools fed by it, ranging from concrete tanks to constructions of river stone terraced down a hillside. The smell of sulphur is constant. Grey mud from the springs is used on the skin at some of them. The village also has a fumarole field, Screw's Sulphur Spa being the best known of the setups.

When to go

Year round; evenings are the popular time and several pools open late. Cool weather after rain makes the hot water better. The sulphur smell is constant.

Honest expectations

The sulphur smell is strong and clings to skin, hair and swimwear. Pools vary widely in cleanliness and upkeep. Each operation charges separately and none is cheap.
