Morne Bruce rises directly behind Roseau and was the garrison hill in the colonial period, with the barracks and gun positions placed to cover both the town and the bay. A large cross stands at the viewpoint now, and from it the whole of Roseau is laid out below with the Caribbean beyond and the mountains behind. Jack's Walk climbs from the Botanic Gardens in around twenty minutes, steeply and mostly in the open.

What you actually see

  • The viewpoint - Roseau and the bay laid out directly below.
  • The cross - the large marker set at the lookout point.
  • Jack's Walk - the steep twenty-minute climb from the Botanic Gardens.
  • The garrison remains - traces of the colonial military use of the hill.

When to go

Year round; late afternoon has the best light over the town and sea. Mornings are cooler for the climb. Rain makes Jack's Walk slippery.

Honest expectations

Jack's Walk is steep and largely unshaded, which is hard work in the heat. There is nothing at the top beyond the view and the cross. The residential area around it is private property.

Nearby

The Botanic Gardens are below, and Roseau's historic district is west.
