Sibebe Rock

Sibebe Rock, rising just outside the capital Mbabane, is one of Eswatini's most impressive natural wonders, a colossal dome of exposed granite often described as one of the largest single rocks, or monoliths, in the world, second in bulk only to Australia's Uluru. This vast, sheer whaleback of ancient stone, some three billion years old, looms over the surrounding valley, its bare grey flanks dotted with hardy plants and streaked by water. Climbing it is an exhilarating, steep scramble straight up the rock face, rewarding the effort with panoramic views over the green Swazi hills and a real sense of the earth's deep age.

When to go

May to September, the cooler, drier season, for the safest and most comfortable climb, as the bare rock is hot and can be slippery when wet; go in the cool of the morning, wear good grippy shoes and take water, as there is no shade on the exposed dome. A local guide can be arranged and adds safety and interest.

Honest expectations

The climb is genuinely steep, exposed and strenuous, essentially a scramble straight up bare granite, so it requires reasonable fitness, a head for the exposure and grippy footwear, and it is dangerous when wet; it is not a casual stroll. For those up to it, though, ascending one of the largest rocks on earth for sweeping views over the kingdom, and standing on stone billions of years old, is an exhilarating and memorable experience.
