Tihany Peninsula

Tihany is a blunt volcanic peninsula that narrows Lake Balaton to its tightest crossing. The ridge carries the twin-towered Benedictine abbey, and from the terrace below it you look down on the ferry lane and across to the flat south shore. Behind the village lie two closed basins: the Inner Lake, which still holds water and reeds, and the Outer Lake, which is mostly marsh. The plateau is dry grassland and lavender, planted in blocks that flower around midsummer. Old hot-spring cones stand on the slopes as pale rock stumps, the leftovers of the geothermal activity that followed the eruptions. The whole peninsula is protected as part of Balaton Uplands National Park.

What you actually see

• The abbey terrace - the view over the ferry crossing, the narrows and the south shore.
• The lavender fields - planted blocks on the plateau that flower around mid-June.
• The Inner Lake - a crater basin below the village, ringed by reeds and a walking loop.
• Echo Hill and the geyser cones - pale mineral stumps left by old hot springs on the slopes.

When to go

Lavender peaks around mid-June and pulls the biggest crowds of the year, with a festival to match. May and September give the same views with far less traffic and easier parking. Morning light works better for the shore panorama. In July and August come before ten or after five, and expect the village car parks to fill by late morning.

Honest expectations

Parking is limited and paid, and on summer weekends the village becomes a single slow queue of cars and ice cream stalls. The lavender window is short, and outside it the fields are just grey-green scrub. The plateau has almost no shade. The abbey interior is small for the ticket price, and the souvenir stands along the lane sell much the same lavender bags.
