Established in 1997, this park is not one block of land but several separated units strung along the north side of Balaton. Between them they cover the volcanic buttes of the Tapolca basin, the dry stone-walled landscape of the Kali basin, the Tihany peninsula, the Keszthely hills and the Kis-Balaton wetland at the far western end. The bedrock changes constantly: basalt, dolomite, limestone and peat within a short drive. That mix gives the park its range, from orchid-rich dry grassland and juniper scrub to reedbeds and karst springs. Small visitor sites run by the park explain each piece, and marked trails link most of them to villages rather than to car parks.

What you actually see

  • Hegyestu geological site - a quarried basalt face showing the columns in cross-section, with a hilltop view.
  • The Kali basin - dry grassland, glacial-looking boulder fields and stone-walled village lanes.
  • The Tapolca basin buttes - Szigliget, Csobanc and Szent Gyorgy Hill rising abruptly from farmland.
  • Karst springs and mills - clear outflows around Tapolca and the Keszthely hills feeding old mill ponds.

When to go

Late April to June is the strongest window, with grassland flowering and moderate heat. September and October give harvest colour in the vineyards and clear air. July and August are hot, hazy and busy with lake traffic on every access road. Park visitor sites usually run shorter hours outside the summer season, so check before driving out to a single one.

Honest expectations

The park is fragmented, so seeing it means driving between sites rather than walking one route, and the lakeside roads jam in summer. Signage in English is uneven at smaller sites. Some visitor points close on Mondays or shut entirely from November. Trails cross open grassland with no shade and no water. Expect ticks in long grass from spring onward.

Nearby

Lake Balaton runs along the whole southern edge, with Tihany, Badacsony and Kis-Balaton inside the park itself.
