The Bali Rice Terraces

The rice terraces of Bali are the emerald heart of the island, sculpted in graceful curves down the hillsides and watered by the subak, an ancient, UNESCO-recognised cooperative irrigation system managed through the island's water temples for over a thousand years. The steep, picture-perfect terraces of Tegallalang near Ubud and the vast, sweeping fields of Jatiluwih are the most famous, glowing a vivid green in the tropical light.

When to go

April to October, the dry season, for the best weather; the terraces are greenest during the growing season and golden near harvest, and morning light is loveliest before the crowds and heat. Jatiluwih is quieter and grander than the busy Tegallalang.

What to expect

The famous Tegallalang terraces near Ubud are small, very touristy and lined with cafes, swings and photo spots that charge fees; the larger Jatiluwih terraces are more authentic and peaceful but further out. Walking the terraces means fees to the farmers, which is fair. Go early to beat the crowds and heat.
