The Avenue of the Baobabs

The Avenue of the Baobabs, near Morondava on the west coast of Madagascar, is the iconic image of the island, one of the most striking natural sights in Africa. Along a stretch of dirt road stand dozens of majestic, ancient baobab trees, some up to 800 years old, their enormous, smooth grey trunks rising straight to a distinctive tuft of branches, like trees planted upside down. Silhouetted against the sky, especially in the golden light of sunrise and sunset, this grove of giants is a hauntingly beautiful and photogenic spectacle.

When to go

April to November, the dry season, for the best weather and passable roads; sunrise and sunset are the magical hours when the baobabs are silhouetted against the sky, drawing photographers. The wet season can make the dirt roads difficult.

Honest expectations

It is a specific, iconic photo spot rather than a large attraction, and it can get busy with visitors and vendors at the famous sunset. It is remote, reached via a flight to Morondava and then a drive on rough roads. Madagascar's infrastructure is challenging, with poor roads and long journeys. The avenue itself, especially at sunrise or sunset, though, is genuinely spectacular and unmistakably Madagascar.
