Getting thereOn the Piggs Peak road north of Mbabane; viewpoint and visitor centre signed
EntryFree viewpoints; boat trips charged

The Komati River leaves the Ngwenya highlands through a mountain valley that engineers closed in 2002 with one of southern Africa's taller dam walls - about 115 metres of curved concrete holding back a long, branching lake that mirrors the Hhohho ranges. The visitor centre and viewpoints above the wall make the engineering legible, boat trips work the drowned valley's arms past fishermen and weaver colonies, and the drive itself - the highlands road between Mbabane and Piggs Peak - strings together viewpoints, craft stalls and green mountain country that most itineraries miss entirely.

What you actually see

  • The dam wall - the 115-metre arc from the main viewpoint.
  • The lake arms - boat trips up the drowned valley branches.
  • The highlands drive - the Piggs Peak road's sweep of mountain country.
  • Weaver colonies and fishermen - the lake's working shoreline life.

When to go

April to September for clear mountain light; summer thunderstorms build spectacle but close the views by afternoon. The lake level tells the rain story - full years are the photogenic ones.

Honest expectations

It is a scenic infrastructure stop, not a wilderness - an hour at the viewpoints unless a boat trip or lunch extends it. Boat schedules are informal; arrange at the centre rather than expecting departures on demand. The winding road demands unhurried driving.

Nearby

Piggs Peak's forests, Malolotja Nature Reserve and Phophonyane Falls.
