Ban Gioc Waterfall

Ban Gioc is the largest waterfall in Vietnam, a broad curtain of water that spreads across the Quay Son river in Cao Bang province and steps down in tiers rather than falling in one drop. The river marks an international boundary here, so the cascade is shared, and the view from the Vietnamese bank takes in its full width. Bamboo rafts ferry visitors across the pool to the base of the main tier, close enough for the spray. Around the falls the landscape is classic northern karst: rounded limestone hills, rice paddies and duck ponds along the approach road. Most people combine the visit with Nguom Ngao cave a few kilometres away and treat the pair as one day out from Cao Bang.

• Raft crossings - bamboo rafts that take visitors close to the base of the falls.
• The paddy setting - rice fields and karst hills framing the last few kilometres of road.
• Nguom Ngao cave - the long limestone cave with stalactites a short drive away.

When to go

September and October usually give the best combination of strong flow and ripening rice, after the summer rains but before the river drops. From March to May the water can be thin and the pools shallow. Come early: tour buses from Cao Bang arrive late morning, and by afternoon the falls are in shade for photographs.

Honest expectations

It is a long drive for a waterfall you will have seen in an hour, and the site is heavily developed with paved paths, ticket gates and souvenir stalls. Raft trips are short and charged separately. Flow varies enormously with the season, so photographs taken at peak water can be misleading. The pool area gets crowded and loud once the tour groups land.
