Flatruet
The highest public road in Sweden, crossing a bare plateau at 975 metres past Stone Age rock paintings.

The road over Flatruet runs between Ljungdalen and Mittadalen and tops out at about 975 metres, which makes it the highest road open to the public in the country. It crosses genuinely bare plateau - no trees, low fell vegetation, long views to Helags and the border mountains - and it is closed by snow through the winter, opening usually in late spring. On the rock face at Ruandan, near the western end, some twenty painted figures of elk, bear, reindeer and humans in red ochre, first reported in 1896, are thought to be over 4,000 years old, making Ruandan one of the largest rock painting sites in Sweden. A short walk leads to them from the road.

Practical notes
The road is closed for much of the year and opening dates vary. Weather on the plateau changes quickly and fog is common. The paintings are faint and need good light. There are no services on the crossing.
