Tannforsen

Tannforsen carries more water than any other fall in Sweden - the mean flow is around seven hundred cubic metres a second at high water, over a drop of thirty-eight metres and a width of about sixty - and the noise and spray at the viewpoints are the substance of the visit. It sits on the Are river west of Are village. In summer the spray keeps a permanent rainbow in the right light and the vegetation in the gorge is soaked and mossy. In winter the fall builds enormous ice formations round the edges while water still runs in the middle, which is when many photographers go. A cafe and paths sit at the top.

June to August for volume; February for ice. Two hours.

Honest expectations

Flow varies with the season and regulation upstream. Platforms are wet and slippery from spray. The site is small - the visit is short. Winter access needs care on ice.
