Fryderyk Chopin was born in 1810 in an annexe of the Skarbek manor at Zelazowa Wola, where his father worked as a tutor, and the family moved to Warsaw within months, so his connection to the house is by birth rather than by living there. The manor itself is gone; the surviving annexe was restored in the 1920s and 1930s as a national memorial, furnished in period rather than with original objects, and it is a modest whitewashed building of a few rooms. The park around it is the substantial part: laid out from 1918 by Franciszek Krzywda-Polkowski with several thousand plants and trees, many sent as gifts from around the world, arranged along the Utrata river with pools and bridges. From May to September, piano recitals are given on Sundays in the house with the audience seated in the garden and the windows opened, which is the way to see the place.

What you actually see

  • The birth annexe - a small whitewashed building, restored between the wars.
  • A park of gifts - thousands of plants and trees sent from around the world.
  • Period furnishing - rooms arranged to the era, not with Chopin's own things.
  • Sunday recitals - played indoors with the audience in the garden.

When to go

May to September, for the recitals. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Chopin lived here only as an infant - there are no personal objects. The house is small and coach groups fill it. Recitals are seasonal and weather-dependent. Closed Mondays.

Nearby

Brochow church, where Chopin was baptised, is a few kilometres away.
