The Kiribati Cultural Centre

At Bikenibeu the national collection keeps I-Kiribati heritage under one roof: Te Umwanibong, the cultural centre and museum, cases the dance regalia whose shell-and-fibre armour dresses the famous te mwaie performances, canoe models and navigation craft, coconut-fibre armour of the historic duelling tradition, shell money and adornment, and photographs carrying the atolls' last century including the independence story. Staff conversations animate the labels, occasional dance rehearsals gift lucky timing, and the centre's hour anchors South Tarawa's cultural circuit before the maneabas and markets take over. Kiribati's oral tradition, dance and navigation knowledge are what the centre exists to hold, since very little of it was ever written down.
