The Ladby Ship

Around the year 925 a chieftain was buried at Ladby in a ship some twenty metres long, drawn up on the shore of the fjord and covered with a mound. The timber has long since rotted away, but the shape of the hull survives as an imprint in the soil, with lines of iron rivets holding the outline and the anchor and its chain still in place at the bow. Rather than lift it, excavators built a chamber into the mound itself, so you walk down into the dark and look at the ghost of a ship in the ground. A small museum and a full-scale reconstruction stand alongside.

When to go

Mainly a summer site, with reduced hours from autumn to spring and some winter closure, so check the dates. Mornings are quiet. The reconstruction is in the water in the warmer months and sailing days are occasional and announced in advance, so plan around them if that is what you want to see.

What to expect

What you see is an outline in earth, not a ship, and in the low light of the chamber it takes a moment to resolve at all. The whole visit is under two hours. It is awkward to reach without a car. Prices are modest but so is the scale, and the Roskilde ship museum is far more substantial.

Kerteminde harbour and its beaches are a few kilometres east; Odense is half an hour southwest.
