Fyns Hoved is the northern point of Funen, reached along the narrow Hindsholm peninsula, and it is one of the more dramatic pieces of coast in a country not known for drama: low cliffs of glacial till dropping to the water, dry grassland and heath on the top, small bays and stony beaches, and a very narrow isthmus at Fynshovedvej where the land is barely wider than the road with sea on both sides. The grassland is grazed and holds a rich flora with orchids in early summer, and the exposure makes it a good spot for migrating birds and for seawatching over the Great Belt. Paths run all round the headland. There is very little development beyond a campsite and a few holiday houses.

What you actually see

  • Glacial till cliffs - low bluffs dropping to the water on both sides.
  • The narrow isthmus - sea visible on both sides of the road.
  • Grazed grassland flora - orchids and dry-meadow plants in early summer.
  • Seawatching over the belt - migrating birds at the northern point.

When to go

April to October, with late May and June for the orchids and spring migration. Half a day for a circuit of the headland. It is exposed, so wind and weather matter more than season. Summer weekends bring day visitors.

Honest expectations

There is no shelter anywhere on the headland and the wind is constant. Paths are muddy after rain and cross grazing land with stock. Parking is limited and fills on summer weekends. Facilities are limited to the campsite.

Nearby

Kerteminde is south; Odense lies inland to the south-west.
