Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate is a natural sand spit that almost closes Miyazu Bay, carrying several thousand pines along a strip narrow enough to walk end to end in under an hour. It has been on the standard list of Japan's three famous views for centuries, and the way it is meant to be seen is from a hill at either end, bending over and looking back between your legs, which flips the spit into a pale bridge hanging in the sky. A cable car, a monorail and chairlifts run up to the two viewing parks. On the ground it is a flat walk under pines, with beaches on the seaward side and a rotating bridge at one end.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for the walk and the clearest for the view. July and August fill the beaches and the trains from Kyoto. Winter can dust the pines with snow, which suits the view, but this coast is grey and wet for weeks at a time. Morning light favours the southern hill.

Things to know

Both viewpoints charge for the lift and again inside, and the two are far enough apart that seeing them properly costs most of a day. The sandbar itself is a pleasant but flat and repetitive walk, and some visitors find the payoff thin after a long train ride. Cycle hire helps. The upside-down looking is a tradition, not a revelation.
