Roche d'Oetre

The stretch of Normandy south of Caen is called the Suisse Normande, which oversells it, but Roche d'Oetre is the place that comes closest to earning the name. Old, hard Armorican rock stands in a terrace above a bend in the Rouvre, with the river out of sight below and oak wood falling steeply away on all sides. Seen from the right angle along the cliff, the rock face reads as a human profile, which is the sort of thing you either see at once or never. Paths drop from the terrace into the gorge and along the river, and the valley below is used for climbing and kayaking.

What you actually see

• The gorge terrace - a flat rock platform above the wooded bend of the Rouvre.
• The rock profile - a face read in the cliff from one particular angle along the edge.
• The gorge paths - steep marked routes dropping to the river and back.
• The heath and oak - heather and old coppice on ground too steep to farm.

When to go

April to October, with late spring for the greens and October for the beech and oak colour. Weekday mornings are quiet; Sunday afternoons bring families out from Caen and Flers. After rain the rock and the descent paths are slippery. There is no reason to come in flat grey weather, since the view is the entire point.

Honest expectations

Set against real mountain country this is modest, and visitors arriving with Switzerland in mind will laugh. The main terrace is fenced, but the ground beside it is not, and the drop is serious. Paths into the gorge are steep and greasy in the wet. The site building at the top handles coach traffic and is busy at lunchtime.
