Tagaytay sits on the rim of the ancient caldera that holds Taal Lake, about six hundred metres up, and the two things that follow from that geography are the view and the temperature. The ridge road runs for kilometres with the lake below and Taal Volcano's island in the middle of it, and the drop of several degrees from the lowlands has made the town Manila's standard weekend escape since the American period - which is why the ridge is now solidly built up with restaurants, cafés, hotels and a theme park, most of them positioned for the view. The classic order is bulalo, a beef shank and marrow soup that Tagaytay is known for, eaten looking at the volcano. Taal has erupted in recent years, most seriously in January 2020, closing the island and covering the region in ash; access to the volcano itself depends entirely on the current alert level, which is worth checking before planning around it.

What you actually see

  • The Taal view - the lake, the island and the volcano below.
  • The ridge road - restaurants and cafés along the rim.
  • The cool air - several degrees below the lowlands.
  • The bulalo - the beef soup the town is known for.

When to go

November to May for clear views; weekdays, because weekend traffic from Manila can double the journey and fill every restaurant. Mornings are clearest before cloud builds.

Honest expectations

Weekend traffic is severe and the ridge is thoroughly commercialised. Volcano access depends on the alert level and has been closed for long periods since 2020 - check with the volcanology institute before planning around it.

Nearby

People's Park in the Sky is at the top of the ridge; Caleruega and the Batulao trails are down toward Nasugbu.
