Taal Heritage Town

Taal town sits on a ridge above the Pansipit river, several kilometres from the volcano and lake that share its name. The town was moved here after eruptions in the eighteenth century and rebuilt on a grand scale, which is why a place of this size has a basilica of that size: the church of San Martin de Tours, raised in the nineteenth century, with a facade you step back a long way to fit in a frame. Around it are stone-and-timber ancestral houses, several open as museums, and a shrine to Our Lady of Caysasay down a stone stairway. Workshops in the side streets still embroider barong shirts and forge balisong folding knives.

What you actually see

• Basilica de San Martin de Tours - an enormous colonial church at the top of the town, dwarfing everything around it.
• The ancestral houses - stone below, hardwood and capiz shell above, several open to walk through.
• The Caysasay shrine and stairway - a small hillside chapel reached by an old stone stair below the town.
• Barong and balisong workshops - hand embroidery on pineapple and abaca cloth, and knife forges in the side streets.

When to go

December to May avoids the worst rain; the town is exposed and the climbs between levels are steep in heat, so start early. Weekdays are quiet to the point of empty and house museums may need a knock; weekends are livelier but busier with domestic day-trippers from Manila and Tagaytay.

Honest expectations

It is not Vigan. The houses are scattered along ordinary working streets with traffic, wires and shops between them, and several are shut or open only on request. The town is built on a slope and walking it in the middle of the day is punishing. Some house museums charge separately and the tours are short. Confirm opening days before driving two and a half hours.

Nearby

Taal Lake and its volcano are a short drive north; Tagaytay's ridge viewpoints are on the way back to Manila.
