Jomalig Island

Jomalig sits well out in the Pacific off the Quezon coast, and getting there is the filter: a five-to-six-hour crossing on a wooden boat from Real, often overnight, across open water that turns rough with little warning. What waits is a low island of golden sand - Salibungot Beach runs for kilometres, coloured by the mineral content that gives it its warm tone - backed by groves of agoho, the casuarina pines that look like conifers transplanted to the tropics and hiss in the wind. There are sandbars at Little Boracay, quiet coves, a lagoon, and a population that lives mostly from fishing and copra. Infrastructure is minimal: homestays and tents rather than resorts, generator power for part of the evening, no ATMs, patchy signal. Visitors come for exactly that, and the island has stayed off the mainstream circuit because the boat schedule and the sea make casual trips impossible.

When to go

March to May, the calmest window; the northeast monsoon and typhoon season both close the route. Boats sail on limited days - plan around them, not the reverse.

Honest expectations

The crossing is long and frequently rough; seasickness is the norm rather than the exception. Bring cash, a power bank and supplies. Being stranded an extra day or two by weather is a normal outcome.
