Kaamulan takes its name from amul, a Binukid word meaning to gather, and it is the one festival in the Philippines that most anthropologists will grant is not an invention - it grew from actual assemblies of the seven Indigenous peoples of Bukidnon: Bukidnon, Higaonon, Talaandig, Manobo, Matigsalug, Tigwahanon and Umayamnon. Held at Malaybalay over several weeks from February into March, it includes ritual performances that are genuinely ceremonial rather than staged - the pamuhat rites, the datu proclamations, the kaligaon healing ritual - alongside a street parade in traditional dress, horse fighting, and competitions. The tension in it is real and often discussed locally: the more the festival serves tourism, the more pressure there is to perform rituals out of context, and the communities themselves have argued about where the line sits. Visitors who want to understand what they are looking at should engage with the cultural programme rather than only the parade.
What you actually see
- The seven peoples - Bukidnon's Indigenous groups in their own dress.
- The ritual performances - pamuhat rites and datu proclamations.
- The street parade - the main procession through Malaybalay.
- The competitions - traditional contests and games.
When to go
February into March, with the main days usually at the start of March - confirm with the province, as the schedule varies each year.
Honest expectations
Some of what is performed is ceremonial and not staged for audiences - behave accordingly and ask before photographing rituals or people. Accommodation in Malaybalay is limited. The commercialisation of the festival is a genuine local debate.
Nearby
The Monastery of the Transfiguration is outside Malaybalay; the Kitanglad range rises to the west.
