Jesuit House of 1730

The Jesuit House is the oddest heritage site in Cebu, and the reason is its concealment: the building carries the date 1730 carved over its entrance, making it one of the oldest dated structures in the country, and for most of the twentieth century it stood unrecognised inside the compound of Ho Tong Hardware, with the yard, stock and delivery trucks of a working business built around it. The family that owned the hardware store eventually opened it as a museum, and visitors still walk in through the warehouse gate. Inside are coral-stone walls, hardwood floors, an exposed section showing the construction, and displays on the Jesuits in Cebu, the Parian district and the house's own rediscovery, along with artefacts and old photographs. Guides take visitors through. It is small, strange and genuinely interesting, and it sits within a few minutes of Casa Gorordo and the Yap-Sandiego house.
