The Badrulchau Monoliths

On a grassy headland at Babeldaob's northern tip, dozens of basalt monoliths stand and lean in rough rows above the sea - Badrulchau, Palau's chief archaeological enigma, read by scholars as the pillar foundations of an enormous bai (meeting house) raised many centuries ago, and by legend as the work of the gods interrupted at dawn, leaving the columns forever waiting for their roof. Some stones carry carved faces worn to suggestion. The site's setting does half the work: Pacific wind over the grass, the reef line below, and the drive up Babeldaob's ring road - villages, taro terraces, war relics - as the Palau most divers never see.

When to go

Year round; late afternoon lays the best light across the stones and the drive back south catches the sunset coast. The site is open, breezy and rarely shared.

Honest expectations

It is an atmospheric scatter of stones with light interpretation - the legends and the setting carry it; those needing reconstructed grandeur should recalibrate. The northern road is long by Palau standards - combine with Ngardmau and the ring-road sights to justify the day.
