Ngatpang Waterfall

The Ngatpang waterfall, also called Taki Falls, drops through forest in central Babeldaob into a pool that can be swum in, reached on a walk of around half an hour from where the track ends. The route passes through forest and across the stream. It is smaller and less visited than Ngardmau to the north, and the walk in is the greater part of the outing. Babeldaob is by far the largest island in Palau but holds only a small fraction of the population, which is why its interior is so little visited.

What you actually see

• The fall - the drop through the forest into the pool.
• The pool - the basin at the base, deep enough to swim.
• The forest walk - around half an hour in from the track end.
• The stream crossings - the water the path crosses on the way.

When to go

May to October is the wetter season when the fall runs hardest. The drier months reduce it. The path is muddy after rain.

Honest expectations

The path is muddy and unmarked in places and a local guide helps. State fees are collected. Flow is much reduced in the drier months.
