Belau National Museum

Founded in 1955, the Belau National Museum is Micronesia's oldest - and Palau's memory bank: galleries walk the archipelago's story from first settlement through Spanish, German, Japanese and American flags to independence, with collections of shell money and turtle-shell valuables, war relics, natural history and the famous storyboards - the carved narrative panels that turned bai-house tradition into Palau's signature art form. The garden holds the showpiece: a full-scale bai built by traditional methods, its gables painted with the legends the storyboards retell. An hour or two here reframes every reef and ruin seen afterwards.

When to go

Year round on regular hours; it slots perfectly into arrival day or a surface-interval afternoon between dives. Rainy hours were made for it.

Honest expectations

It is a modest national museum - dated displays in places, air conditioning that negotiates - and the depth rewards readers more than skimmers; the bai and storyboards alone justify the ticket for everyone else. The gift shop's storyboards are the islands' best souvenir buy.
