Across the bridge from Koror, Airai village keeps Palau's most precious building: a bai - the traditional men's meeting house - standing on its stone platform since the late nineteenth century, the oldest surviving of the structures that once anchored every Palauan village. Built without nails, its beams joined and lashed by inherited technique, the bai carries painted gables and interior beams dense with legend: money birds, sharks, the tales that governed and entertained the chiefly councils who met beneath them. Visits arranged through the state bring a keeper's telling of the symbols and protocols - and the surrounding village adds stone paths and war relics to the walk.

What you actually see

  • The ancient bai - well over a century of carved and painted authority.
  • The gable legends - money birds, sharks and story panels decoded.
  • The stone platform - the traditional engineering beneath.
  • Airai's stone paths - the old village fabric around the house.

When to go

Year round by arrangement - turning up unannounced may find it closed; Koror hotels and the state office set visits up easily. Morning light favours the painted facade.

Honest expectations

This is living chiefly heritage, not a staged attraction: fees, protocols and the keeper's guidance are the terms, interiors may be restricted, and photography follows permission. The visit is short and dense - worth it precisely for the telling.

Nearby

Koror, the Airai war relics and Babeldaob's ring road north.
