Piram Seowon

Piram was founded in 1590 to honour Kim In-hu, a scholar and teacher of the region, and it survived where many academies did not, so the plan can be read whole: a pavilion open on all sides at the entrance, a lecture hall behind it, student dormitories to either side, and the shrine walled off at the back on higher ground. That arrangement is the same in every seowon, but here the setting does the work, with a stream running past the gate, old trees leaning over the yard and hills close in behind. It was one of the nine academies listed together in 2019, and it is usually the emptiest of them.

What you actually see

• Hwakyeollu - the open pavilion above the stream at the entrance.
• The lecture hall - the plain timber hall at the centre of the plan.
• The dormitories - two student wings facing each other across the yard.
• The stream and old trees - the setting that separates Piram from the others.

When to go

Spring and autumn suit it best, and the trees over the courtyard are the reason to come in late October. It is nearly always quiet on weekdays. There is no bus stop at the gate, so most people arrive by taxi from Jangseong or drive. An hour or two covers the site comfortably.

Honest expectations

It is small, and if you have already seen Dosan or another seowon the layout will look familiar, because these academies were built to a formula. Nothing is entered, so you look at buildings from the yard. English interpretation is minimal, public transport is poor without a car, and the visit is over inside an hour.
