Lanyon Homestead

Lanyon sits on a flat above the Murrumbidgee River with the Brindabella Ranges behind it, and the setting does much of the work. The main house was built in 1859 for a pastoral family, but the property is older: the earliest structures date from the 1830s and were put up with assigned convict labour, and several survive as outbuildings around the yard. The rooms are furnished to the late nineteenth century, and the interpretation covers the station workers and the Ngunnawal connection to this valley as well as the owners. Outside there are gardens, old peppercorn trees, farm buildings and a view across paddocks to the mountains that has barely changed.

• The garden and peppercorns - old plantings, hedges and lawns surrounding the house.

When to go

The house opens on set days rather than daily, so check before driving out. Spring and autumn are best for the garden and for walking the grounds; Canberra summers are hot and dry, and winter mornings are frosty. Afternoon light suits the view west to the ranges. It combines well with a drive on to Tharwa and the Namadgi country beyond.

Honest expectations

Opening is limited to certain days and hours, and arriving on the wrong one means a locked gate. It is a modest colonial house rather than a mansion, and the visit is short unless you walk the grounds properly. There is no public transport out here. The cafe and shop keep the same restricted hours as the house, so carry something if your timing is uncertain.
