Lalon Shah, who died in 1890, is the central figure of the Baul tradition, the mystic singers of Bengal whose songs question caste, scripture and religious division, and his shrine at Cheuriya on the edge of Kushtia is the tradition's heart: a domed tomb in a courtyard complex where Baul musicians live, gather and sing, with music most evenings and two great festivals, at Dol Purnima in spring and on the anniversary of his death in October, when tens of thousands come and the singing runs through the nights. The Baul tradition is inscribed by UNESCO. An academy and museum stand beside the shrine. Visitors are received openly, and sitting through an evening of singing is the point of coming.

What you actually see

  • The domed tomb of Lalon - the centre of the Baul tradition.
  • Evening singing in the courtyard - musicians gathered most nights.
  • The two great festivals - spring and October, nights of continuous song.
  • The academy and museum - the institution beside the shrine.

When to go

November to March for a quiet visit; the October anniversary and the spring Dol Purnima are the festivals, crowded and extraordinary. Two hours, or an evening. Accommodation in Kushtia fills at festival times.

Honest expectations

Festival crowds are very heavy and facilities strain. The music is devotional and goes on for hours; it rewards patience. Photography of singers should be asked. Kushtia is far from the usual routes.

Nearby

Shilaidaha is north-east; Kushtia town is beside it.
