Soswaewon was made in the 1530s by Yang San-bo, who withdrew from official life after his teacher was executed in a factional purge and built a retreat in a bamboo valley near Damyang. It is the best-preserved example of the Joseon scholar's garden, and the principle it demonstrates is restraint: the stream was not diverted, the slope was not terraced flat, the rocks were left where they lay, and the buildings - two small pavilions and a study - were placed to sit within what was already there. Water runs under a low wall, over a small fall and through the middle of the garden; bamboo and old trees close it in. A poem sequence and a woodblock plan of the garden from 1755 survive, which is why the layout is known in detail. It is small, about a hectare, and takes under an hour. Understanding what is deliberate about it takes reading beforehand.

What you actually see

  • The stream through the garden - run under the wall, left as found.
  • Gwangpunggak and Jewoldang - the pavilion and study.
  • The bamboo enclosure - the valley closed in on all sides.
  • The unaltered ground - rocks and slope kept in place.

When to go

May to June for green and October for colour. Early morning is quiet and much the best; weekends bring coach groups to a very small site.

Honest expectations

It is one hectare with three buildings, and visitors expecting a large garden are disappointed. Without knowing the design principle, it can read as simply a wooded slope. Ticketed.

Nearby

The Damyang bamboo forest at Juknokwon and the Metasequoia road are close.
