Chandelier Cave near Malakal Harbour off Koror is a flooded limestone cave dived through a series of connected chambers, each with an air pocket at the top where divers can surface among stalactites hanging down to the water: formations made when the sea was lower and the cave was dry. Five chambers are usually dived. Torches are essential and the silt at the bottom clouds instantly if disturbed.

What you actually see

  • The stalactites - formations hanging above the water in the air pockets.
  • The chambers - the connected rooms dived in sequence.
  • The air pockets - the surfaces divers can come up into inside the cave.
  • The sea level history - formations made when the cave was above water.

When to go

November to April is the drier season. The cave is dived year round as it is sheltered. Visibility inside depends entirely on how much silt gets stirred.

Honest expectations

This is an overhead environment and requires appropriate training and a guide. Silt clouds the water instantly if fins touch the bottom. Torches are essential and a failure would be serious.

Nearby

Koror is nearby, and Nikko Bay is east.
