Mariner's Cave has no visible entrance: the way in is a submerged tunnel a couple of metres down in the cliff face, swum through on one breath to surface inside a sealed chamber. Because the chamber is airtight, the swell compresses and decompresses the air, so the whole space fogs and clears with each wave. The story attached to it is of a chief hiding a young woman here.

What you actually see

  • The submerged entrance - a tunnel swum on one breath with no visible opening.
  • The fogging air - the chamber misting and clearing with each swell.
  • The sealed chamber - a space with no opening above water.
  • The legend - the story of a chief hiding a young woman inside.

When to go

May to October is the drier season with the calmest water. Swell makes the entry dangerous and closes it. Trips run in the morning.

Honest expectations

Entry means free-diving through a submerged tunnel and is genuinely not for everyone; people panic. Swell makes it dangerous and guides refuse in poor conditions. There is no light inside beyond what comes through the water.

Nearby

Swallows' Cave is nearby, and Neiafu is east.
