Getting thereNear Feletoa on Vava'u; road then a walk and a scramble down
EntryLandowner fee

Veimumuni is a cave near Feletoa on Vava'u holding a pool of clear fresh water, reached by scrambling down through the entrance into the chamber, and it is tied to a Tongan story about a young man who found a spirit woman bathing here and took her comb so she would have to come to him. The pool is cold and deep enough to swim, and the water is drinkable. The spring inside is one of the few reliable fresh water sources on this part of the island, which is why the site mattered long before the story attached to it.

What you actually see

  • The freshwater pool - clear cold water inside the chamber.
  • The scramble down - the descent through the entrance into the cave.
  • The story - the legend of the spirit woman and the stolen comb.
  • The chamber - the enclosed space around the pool.

When to go

May to October is the drier season. The pool holds water year round. The descent is slippery after rain.

Honest expectations

The scramble down is awkward and slippery and there are no steps or rail. A landowner fee is collected. There is no lighting inside beyond what comes through the entrance.

Nearby

Feletoa is nearby, and Neiafu is south.
