Ene'io Botanical Garden

'Ene'io is the only botanical garden in Tonga, built up over decades on a coastal estate east of Neiafu by a family that collected and planted several hundred species: Pacific natives, fruit trees, palms, orchids and medicinal plants, laid out along paths running down to a private beach. Tours are guided and cover traditional uses of the plants. A Tongan feast is served by arrangement. The family that built it spent more than thirty years collecting, and much of the planting came from cuttings gathered across the Pacific rather than bought in. A small nursery on the site propagates natives for replanting elsewhere in Vava'u.

When to go

May to October is the drier season. Flowering is heaviest in the warmer wet months. Tours should be booked ahead.

Honest expectations

Visits are guided only and must be arranged in advance. The garden is a private operation and prices reflect that. Maintenance varies across the grounds.
