The Jardin Exotique hangs off the cliff at Monaco's western edge, a garden of thousands of succulents and cacti - some planted nearly a century ago and grown to tree scale - terraced down the rock face on paths and bridges with the whole principality laid out below: the port, the palace rock, the towers, the sea. At the garden's foot opens the Grotte de l'Observatoire, a cave of stalactites inhabited in prehistory, visited on guided descents of several hundred steps. Between plants, panorama and cave it is the best-value few hours in one of the world's most expensive places.

What you actually see

  • The giant succulents - century-old cacti and aloes on the cliff terraces.
  • The panorama - the principality, port and sea from the paths.
  • Grotte de l'Observatoire - the guided cave descent below the garden.
  • The anthropology museum - the prehistory finds beside the entrance.

When to go

Open year round with the Riviera climate keeping the succulents happy; winter-spring flowering aloes add colour when the coast is quiet. Cave tours run on set times - check on arrival. Note: the garden has undergone long renovation phases; confirm current opening before a special trip.

Honest expectations

Paths are stepped, steep and unsuitable for reduced mobility; the cave adds hundreds of stairs more. The renovation closures of recent years have periodically shut all or part of the site - checking ahead genuinely matters here. When open, it earns its reputation; when shut, the nearby Princess Grace rose garden partly consoles.

Nearby

The old town rock, the oceanographic museum and the Fontvieille gardens.
