Al Sawadi Beach

Al Sawadi is a shallow bay on the Batinah coast with a group of rocky islands offshore, the nearest of which carries an old watchtower on its summit and can be reached on foot across the sand at low tide, which is the reason most people come. Boats run out to the further islands for snorkelling, and the reefs there are among the better ones on this stretch of coast, with turtles frequently seen. The beach itself is broad, shallow and used by local families, with shell collecting a common pastime. A resort operated here for years and has been through closure and redevelopment. The tide has to be checked before walking out.

When to go

October to April; the Batinah is hot and humid in summer. Low tide is essential for the island walk, so check tables before setting out. Mornings are calmer for boats.

What to expect

The tide comes in faster than expected and people have been caught out on the island. There are no lifeguards. Facilities have been intermittent as the resort has changed hands. Litter on the beach is a recurring problem.
