Wadi Hawqayn

Wadi Hawqayn lies in the hills between Rustaq and the Dhahirah, and it is a green wadi rather than a rocky one: a falaj and springs feed date and banana plantations along the valley floor, water runs over rock ledges in a series of small falls, and pools under the palms are used for swimming. A ruined mud fort stands on a rise above the village, and a mosque and old houses sit among the gardens. The wadi is reached on a sealed road with a short walk to the falls, which makes it easier than most and popular with families at weekends. Water flow varies considerably with the season and with rainfall.

When to go

October to April for the weather; flow is strongest after winter rain and can be very weak by late spring. Weekdays are quiet. Avoid the wadi during and after heavy rain.

Practical notes

The falls are small and can dry to a trickle. Weekend crowds and litter are a problem. Modest swimming dress is expected. The fort ruin is unstable and unrestored.
