Barka fort stands close to the shore on the Batinah coast, built in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, and its distinguishing feature is an octagonal tower, an uncommon form in Omani military architecture where round and square towers are the rule. The fort has a courtyard, living rooms and a wind tower, and the roof gives views along the beach and over the town. Barka is associated with the accession of the Al Bu Said dynasty in the mid-eighteenth century. The town has a large morning fish market on the beach, a bullfighting ground where Omani-style bull butting contests are held on Fridays in season, and workshops making Omani halwa.

What you actually see

  • The octagonal tower - the unusual eight-sided form on the walls.
  • The courtyard and rooms - the interior arrangement of the fort.
  • The fish market - the morning landing and sale on the beach.
  • Halwa workshops - the confectionery Barka is known for.

When to go

October to April; the Batinah coast is very humid in summer. The fish market runs early in the morning. Bull butting contests are held on Fridays in the cooler months.

Honest expectations

The fort is small and takes about an hour. Restoration is heavy and interpretation minimal. Bull butting involves animals pushing head to head; it is not a fight to injury but some visitors will not want to attend. Beach and market areas are working, not tidied for visitors.

Nearby

Al Sawadi lies west; Nakhal is inland.
