Bilad Sayt

Bilad Sayt sits in a bowl high in the western Hajar at the head of a side valley off Wadi Bani Awf, a village of stone and mud houses stacked on a slope with terraced fields of date, banana and lucerne stepped below it, fed by a falaj from springs above. It is one of the most photographed villages in Oman precisely because of that composition: green terraces against bare grey mountain. Getting there means driving up Wadi Bani Awf on a graded track that is four-wheel drive only, with the option of continuing over the Sharaf al Alamayn pass toward Al Hamra. The village is inhabited and working, so visitors are walking through people's fields and lanes.

• Wadi Bani Awf - the gorge road on the approach.

When to go

October to April; summer is very hot and flash flood risk in the wadi is highest with any rain. Mornings give the best light on the terraces. Avoid the wadi entirely when rain is forecast.

Honest expectations

Four-wheel drive is essential and the track is steep with exposed sections. The village is inhabited and privacy should be respected; photographing residents without asking is resented. There are no facilities. Flash flooding in Wadi Bani Awf is a genuine danger.
